Bryce Menzies had a good run qualifying for the Baja 500 yesterday. They ended up second spot. While the qualifying spot determines the starting position and may help somewhat if it's dusty to "sail" up front in clear air / good visibility does it have not such an big importance for the race.
The 46th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert race feature a course of approximately 500 miles.

At the opening race of the 2013 SCORE desert series Redbull was the force to deal with in the Trophy Truck class. Bryce Menzies from Las Vegas in the #70 RedBull trophy truck takes first place at the 27th Annual SCORE San Felipe 250 after finishing a mere 27 seconds ahead of another RedBull athlete,Tavo Vildosola, the 2010 Baja 1000 winner, in the #21 trophy truck.

Also a strong showing for Redbull in the motorcycle class with KTM Redbull riders Kurt Caselli and Ivan Ramirez winning the race.

The Red Bull Mexican Logistics father/son team of Gus Vildosola Sr. and Gus Vildosola Jr. have repeated their 2010 Baja 1000 overall win, giving a Mexican national team the overall title for only the second time in the history of the race. They completed the 1,121-mile course in less than 20 hours, beating the two-wheeled riders to the finish line for the second time in the past three contests.
Gustavo, 59, and Gustavo Jr, 30, of Mexicali, Mexico, repeated the history they made in this race in 2010 when they became the first Mexican national team to capture the overall title in the granddaddy of all desert racing in their No. 21, Red Bull Vildosola Racing Ford F-150.

With Gustavo Jr driving large starting and finishing sections of the course and his father Gus driving a small section in the center of the course, the dedicated pair covered the exasperating course in 19 hours and 45 minutes, averaging a strong 56.79 miles per hour.


The Vildosola team also recorded the fastest time on the course for all vehicles, including motorcycles, which have recorded the fastest time in 36 of the 45-year history of the race.
298 starters leaving the Ensenada, Baja California starting line Thursday morning and as the finish line in La Paz, Baja Californa Sur closed Saturday morning at 10:01:30hr PST 174 official finishers had made it within the 45 hr. time limit.

With the 2012 Peninsula Run, the 45th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, it was obvious that another memorable and colorful chapter had been added to the legacy of this popular desert race in the magnificent Baja California peninsula.

2012 SCORE Baja 500 was another epic race for the record books. Bryce Menzies takes the win over Bj Baldwin by mere seconds after tackling 450 miles of the roughest terrain that Baja California has to offer.
The first truck to cross the finish line would be that of the Monster Energy Drink Trophy Truck #97; BJ Baldwin. Shortly after Baldwin crossed the finish line, the 2011 SCORE Baja 500 winner and 2011 SCORE Points Champion; Bryce Menzies would come sliding into the finish line.

Bryce Menzies 6th place finisher (pending tracking devise reviews) at today's San Felipe 250 SCORE desert race. At the beginning of the race Red Bull stable mate Tavo Vildosola burned up a firework displaying raw speed giving Vildosola the early lead. Unfortunate for Vildosola Racing the trophy truck tranny could not hold up to the San Felipe race-course abuse. A extensive transmission repair was due. They made it to the finish line! Looks like 12th or 13th due to the problems.

Menzies Motorsports Ready for Round 2 of 2011 SCORE Desert Racing Season. Bryce Menzies leads SCORE points chase going into the 2011 SCORE San Felipe 250. The 2011 SCORE racing season has officially started and Menzies Motorsports started the year out winning the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge. Since their big win the crew has been hard at work getting ready for what is turning out to be one of the most exciting and busiest years for the Menzies Team.


With the SCORE San Felipe 250 race weekend ahead the #70 Trophy Truck crew chief Pete Mortensen has been hard at work making sure the truck is prepped and ready. Everyone, from teammates to volunteers, has been working tirelessly and the time is finally here to put the pedal to the metal again and give fans and sponsors something to talk about! This year marks the 25th annual SCORE San Felipe 250 and with a race course of 252.09 miles it is going to give all the drivers a ride they will never forget! The green flag will drop at approximately 10a.m on Saturday March 12th at the famous San Felipe landmark Arches.

Son and father desert racers Gustavo Vildosola, Jr. and Sr. made history early Friday morning along with Kendall Norman/Quinn Cody and the Appleton brothers who are all unofficial early winners of the 1061.69-mile 43rd edition of the legendary Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race down Mexico’s mysteriously magical Baja Peninsula from Ensenada from La Paz.

Gustavo Jr., 28, and Gustavo Sr., 57, of Mexicali, Mexico have become the first Mexican national team to capture the overall title in the Granddaddy of all Desert Racing in their #21 Redbull Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck in the 43-year history of the world’s most famous desert race.

Norman and Cody, the JCR/Honda Racing team stars, dominated the motorcycle portion of the race on their Honda CRF450X and brothers Steve and Chris Appleton withstood the challenge and conquered the Baja in the unlimited class 1 in a Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car.

The Vildosola's came close to the overall victory in 2007 when they placed second to winners Mark Post and Rob MacCachren in the 40th anniversary event that finished in Cabo San Lucas.

In this year’s race, Gus Vildosola, Jr. started and finished and Gus, Sr. drove a section in the middle the grueling route. They finished with an unofficial overall time of 19 hours and four seconds, averaging 55.67 miles per hour, marking the first time a four-wheel vehicle has recorded a faster time than the motorcycles since 1973 in a peninsula run to La Paz.

The Vildosola victory also have BFGoodrich Tires, celebrating its 35th year of SCORE Baja racing in 2010, its 24th overall four-wheel victory in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, including the last four straight.

Norman and Cody gave Honda its 21 overall motorcycle victory including its 14th consecutive triumph, after Norman drove the first and final sections and Cody the middle to a winning time of 19:22:22 with an average speed of 54.87mph. It was the fifth overall career win for Norman and fourth straight in this race while Cody picked up his third career Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 overall motorcycle victory.

Defending SCORE Trophy-Truck season point champion and NASCAR Sprint Cup regular Robby Gordon was second overall 4-wheel vehicles and in SCORE Trophy-Truck, finishing unofficially 22:18 behind the Vildosolas in his No. 1 Chevy CK1500 SCORE Trophy-Truck.

Awaiting the finalization of the review of the ‘black boxes’ by SCORE officials, third and fourth overall in four-wheel vehicles and among SCORE Trophy-Trucks was a battle between a pair of Nevada racers — Roger Norman and B.J. Baldwin. Norman appears to have finished 53 seconds ahead of Las Vegas’ Baldwin on elapsed time. Norman drives the No. 8 Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy-Truck while Baldwin teamed with Chad Ragland, Vista, Calif. in this race in the No. 97 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck.

“This race means a lot to me and my family,” Vildisola, Jr. said. “Every time we go out and race, I say we have the privilege of representing Mexico because we’re the only Mexican SCORE Trophy-Truck team. It’s obviously an honor to finally be able to win a race for them and for all of our fans who have been supporting us for all these years. And it is especially great for my dad, as well. He bought this SCORE Trophy-Truck eight years with the dream to win a Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 overall and today we were able to fulfill that dream.”

With 292 starters leaving the Ensenada starting line Thursday morning, competitors from 37 states and 19 countries are battling in the rugged terrain in cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs in 33 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes.

Massive crowds reaching nearly 250,000 have lined the historic Baja peninsula to gain a glimpse of the competitors. Vehicles left the start line in 30-second intervals and all vehicles will have 45 vehicles to become official finishers of the race.

This year’s Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 is the 36th time in the first 43 years of the storied race that it started in Ensenada and it is the 18th time it is finishing in La Paz. The 292 starters represents the third highest number in the 18 years it has finished in La Paz and it is the 11th highest total in the 43-year history of the race.

The Vildosola is leading this years Baja 1000 peninsula run ahead of BJ "Balistic" Baldwin, Roger Norman and Robby Gordon (no powered by his own, all new "Speed Energy" beverage). The total race mileage is 1061 so plenty to go and we expect the first vehicles to come in here in La Paz, Baja Sur 5:00 - 6:00 am. The first trophy truck left this morning at 11:32 PST in Ensenada, Baja California (north - about 80km south of the USA -MEX border). This is the 43rd running of this desert-racing classic. In the 43-year history of the SCORE Baja 1000, this will be the 36th time the race has started in Ensenada and the 18th time it has finished in La Paz.

After 534 grueling miles in the Nevada desert, Rick D. Johnson earned the victory at Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno race. Not only did Johnson earn the overall four-wheel truck and buggy victory, but his race time of 9 hours, 10 minutes and 42 seconds was the fastest time of the entire race – even the motorcycles. “I’m beat tired, but I’m great. It’ hasn’t sunk in yet,” Johnson said at the finish line after having to wait nearly 20 minutes to make sure second-place finisher Chris Kemp didn’t catch him on corrected time. “We never qualify on the poll, but if we’re in the top 10 I’m happy, and I just was really very satisfied with our starting position and knew that there was some good fast guys in front of us and if we got out there and didn’t have any trouble,” Johnson said. “Man, we got out there and everything just felt so good, and we just kept pushing and pushing. The crew was incredible. They were just on it.”

Johnson and co-driver Brian Sallee credited the pit crew with amazing pit stops – so amazing that of the three stops the longest was only 50 seconds. Having only one flat during the 9 hours of racing the team, of course, also credited the General Tires for standing up to the abuse.

“We got to thank our pit guys,” Sallee said. “I mean those guys were doing 50-second pit stops, changing two tires and full fuel, that’s 70-plus gallons of fuel, and they greased the driveline, and they did it three times today.”

Johnson is now the first driver to earn two Vegas to Reno victories, having now finished on the podium the last three years after winning in 2008, taking third last year in the three-day “long way” race, and winning again this year.

“Certain drivers have certain races that just seem to come to them, and Vegas to Reno is one for us, and at the 500 we also do well,” Johnson said. “It’s a mind thing too, you come and you feel good about doing good and, I don’t know, it helps. This is just one of those races for us.”

Although Gustavo Vildosola was the second truck across the line, on corrected time it was the Class 1500 buggy of Chris Kemp who earned second place after coming off the line 20th.

Another vehicle working through the pack to earn a podium spot was the Norman Motorsports team of Roger Norman and first-time Armin Schwartz, who was racing his first time in a truck after traditionally racing Class 1 (or Class 1500 in BITD) racecars.

“When it’s very tight and twisty, then of course you feel the weight, the truck is not as handy as the Class 1,” Schwartz said. “But in all, I think the truck is very good. I would like to try and do it again now after getting a little bit of confidence.”

“We did great, it’s a tough race,” Norman said. “That’s the main problem I had, just fighting the dust all day long. I think we were 10th physical and fourth on time when I got out of the truck. I think we had a shot at winning it, we were really close.”
